We have reached a pivotal point in the Open Data Editor (ODE) project. Our simple, low-tech application, created to detect errors in tables and enhance data literacy across non-technical communities, is evolving into a key companion tool designed to support organisations in the early and critical stages of their AI journey. The next release will offer validation-focused AI assistance and trust-building features.
Beyond the Pilot Programme with organisations around the world – whose second cohort was recently announced – we are now establishing additional channels for engagement and dialogue with our communities, to further our commitment to quality data validation, offline performance optimisation, and ethical integration with AI workflows.
Today, we are announcing a series of four online meetings – ‘Open Sessions’ – to address key issues concerning the project’s present and future.
These will be open meetings moderated by the ODE team to reflect together with our communities on the issues that are affecting us. See below for the themes of each session and register for the first meeting.
This invitation is open to everyone in our networks and communities – School of Data, Open Data Day, Open Knowledge Network – as well as users of the app and those interested in finding out more.
- #1 What Open Data Editor does and what it does not
- #2 Trustworthy AI in practice: what happens when you upload your data to AI-powered services
- #3 Teaching AI Literacy
- #4 Open Data Editor future stewardship and sustainability

Open Sessions #1
What Open Data Editor does and what it does not
Understanding what problems a software solves is just as important as knowing what its limits are. The focus of the first open session is to discuss the main features of the Open Data Editor with the community, such as detecting errors in tables, ensuring the application of FAIR principles and improving data quality. It will also clarify what the app doesn’t do, for example data visualisation or graphics. In this talk, we will compare ODE with similar tools and welcome suggestions for improvements, particularly with regard to the ethical AI integration we are currently working on, but without losing focus on ODE’s essence and what it solves.

Open Sessions #2
Trustworthy AI in practice: what happens when you upload your data to AI-powered services
As AI-powered tools become more integrated into data workflows, understanding how these systems handle sensitive information is crucial. In this session, we’ll explore the practical implications of uploading data to AI-driven platforms – addressing key concerns like data privacy, security, and ethical usage. We’ll discuss how transparency, accountability, and fairness are maintained (or overlooked) in AI services, and what safeguards users should look for. Always keeping an eye on and exploring how integrating AI into the Open Data Editor can be beneficial in guaranteeing data quality for people with no programming or coding knowledge.

Open Sessions #3
Teaching AI Literacy
In this session, we’ll explore how communities, educators, and advocates can build AI literacy as a collective strategy – empowering everyone to critically understand, engage with, and shape AI tools and systems. We’ll delve into accessible, hands-on methods for introducing concepts like algorithmic bias, data privacy, and responsible AI use. Together, we will share learning strategies and build a shared resource for ethical, inclusive AI education. Join us as we continue to cultivate a space where AI literacy is not just about tools, but about empowerment, agency, and community.

Open Sessions #4
Open Data Editor future stewardship and sustainability
This session will bring our community together to reflect on the long-term governance, resource model and roadmap for the sustained development of ODE. While earlier sessions have focused on clarifying ODE’s role, exploring the integration of trustworthy AI, and nurturing AI literacy, this session will take a broader view. Now that the app has reached stability and early maturity, we will discuss: how can funding, contributions, and oversight be structured transparently going forward, and which governance models will best serve the tool, its users, and the public good over time? This session provides a platform for stakeholders, users and the core team to envision a sustainable future for ODE within an ever-evolving data and AI landscape.
