3 MinRead
We are thrilled to announce that the School of Data project has a stunning new website! This launch marks a major milestone in our community’s exciting reactivation journey, providing a central hub for anyone looking to build powerful data skills for change. Visit the website now at the same address, schoolofdata.org.
For those who need a refresher, School of Data is a global network dedicated to empowering civil society, journalists, and citizens with the data literacy skills they need to hold power to account, drive evidence-based decision-making, and create positive change in their communities.
The new schoolofdata.org is a comprehensive, user-friendly library of courses designed for self-paced learning. And it works smoothly on mobile devices, too.
Free & Open Access, No Walls
True to our open knowledge principles, every single course and resource on the website is completely free, open-access, and requires no registration. Learn on your terms, without barriers.
A Rich Curriculum, Old and New
We’ve brought back the foundational courses that made School of Data famous, and we’re steadily adding new content. Whether you’re a complete beginner wondering what a CSV file is or an analyst looking to sharpen your data wrangling skills, you’ll find something for you.
Stories from the Ground: The New Blog
Data skills are nothing without impact. Our new blog section, now integrated into the Open Knowledge Blog, is dedicated to sharing powerful stories from our community members and partners around the world. All posts from the old blog have been transferred to the new site and can be found under the new section. Read about how data literacy is making a real difference on the ground and get inspired by the work of your peers.
Dive Into Our Courses
Our curriculum is built around practical, hands-on learning. Here are a few key courses to get you started:
Developed in partnership with Open Knowledge Brazil and Escola de Dados, Quality and consistent data with the Open Data Editor is an essential open educational resource for anyone who wants to generate knowledge from data. The course is specially designed for non-technical users working with tabular data (Excel, Google Sheets, CSV) but without advanced technical knowledge. It’s a must-have skill for anyone working with data.
Other essential and thematic courses to explore include:
An Introduction to Aid Data: Introduction to the world of data available on the topic of international aid, from finding it, cleaning it, visualising it and using it in the media.
Our Historical Impact
While our reactivation is recent, our community’s historical impact and new momentum are something we’re incredibly proud of. The School of Data network has:
Trained over 6,000 people through direct workshops and events since its inception.
A network of hundreds of certified data trainers across the globe.
Supported countless NGOs, journalists, and activists in their data-driven advocacy work.
Our new strategy focuses on empowering these trainers – our “multipliers” – to scale this impact exponentially in their local contexts.
