Younger researchers and students do not know how to use physical archives and tend to only seek information only online or via AI. Many documentation centres, especially small ones in the Global South, want to digitise their archives, but do not know how to begin.
As part of an AI Learning Labs collaboration, OKFN and AVANCSO are convening experts, developers, and practitioners to a roundtable conversation to explore the design decisions that go into digitising physical archives today.
Including:
- A mapping of the questions that a documentation centre needs to ask/answer to avoid missteps from the beginning
- The choices around AI models and architectures
- A scoping of the time and resources needed to make an archive ready for AI
