  • I actually enjoyed the way OGP Summit was scheduled. Since sessions were different lengths and took place in multiple venues, I think that NOT using one-size-fits-all boxes for everyone was actually a good decision: having a bit of time between sessions great for ad-hoc encounters as well as planned meetings. This is also why it worked perfectly fine for me not to have a big blob of time dedicated specifically to lunch. I think that putting this under the “Ugly” heading is highly subjective, for me it’s the opposite.

“Quality, not quantity” is a false dichotomy. I found most panels and workshops I attended to be excellent and loved that there was a massive amount of content to choose from (like on YouTube, I considered quantity and variety to be a good thing). And serious pruning had already happened: only a fraction of submitted proposals made it onto the final program. I think we’d be worse off with fewer sessions. And even if the Summit *did* have fewer sessions with neat boxes to put them into there would still be frustrating overlaps (because 4000+ people).

Yes, big conferences can feel overwhelming. I enjoyed #OGP16 scheduling, rich program and fantastic “coffee space” that encouraged interaction.
