###About OpenSpending

OpenSpending is about Mapping the Money.

The aim is to help track every (public) government and corporate financial transaction across the world and present it in useful and engaging forms for everyone from a school-child to a data geek.

The Spending Stories Project is connected to OpenSpending.org and is targeted at journalists and bloggers. In a nutshell, the project aims to provide a set of tools for journalists researching government spending, aiming to speed up fact checking, contextualise and provide visualisations for stories about spending.

###Responsibilities

The Community Coordinator will be responsible for expanding and diversifying the OpenSpending network, for helping to bring the project’s activities to a wider audience, and for identifying new potential collaborations, projects and activities with external partners.

  • Engages with journalists
  • Evangelises about the data journalism activities of the Foundation
  • Identifies potential funded projects, and communicating with potential funders and sponsors
  • Coordinates the projects’s overall comms, publicity and events strategies, including liaising with the press, producing updates for social media, soliciting for guest blog posts, running competitions and events, creating films and promotional material etc.

##Labs Developer

Open Knowledge Foundation “Labs” is a mission to foster a community of expertise in the world of open data and data wrangling, from scraping to munging to visualising to storytelling, and aims in the process to build tools and projects that become indispensable to their users.

If you want the opportunity to work with some of the most committed and intelligent people around, while being well rewarded for your work on genuinely world-changing projects, we want to hear from you. We are hiring for a number of roles, but in particular we are looking for someone with both technical and “soft” skills, to run our Labs project. The successful candidate will combine programming ability in a modern language such as Python or Ruby with good technical writing skills, and top notch “people skills”: you will be coordinating with numerous people inside and outside the organisation to make the project a success. A developed interest in data visualisation techniques would be a major plus.

Note that interest, skills and a commitment to improving the world are more important than experience — current (or soon-to-be) graduates are encouraged to apply!

See here for more info.

##Front End Web Developer

We’re looking to hire a front end web developer to join the team at the Open Knowledge Foundation. We’re a small group working on a fantastic set of open-source products and services that help people create, use and share open information and data.

You’ll be able to play a leading role in creating and shaping the functionality and user experience of several of our major projects including:

  • The Data Hub and the associated opensource CKAN software (Github Repo) – tools that make it easy to publish, share and use data. CKAN powers Data.Gov.UK, the IATI Registry and several other government and community data sites around the world.
  • OpenSpending – aiming to track every government and corporate financial transaction across the world and present it in useful and engaging forms for everyone from a school-child to a data geek. Spending Stories, which is part of the OpenSpending project was one of the winners of the 2011 Knight News Challenge.
  • The Annotator (Github Repo) – an open-source JavaScript library and tool that make the web annotatable. Add it to any web page in seconds or boot a bookmarklet to annotate anytime, anywhere. Annotations can have comments, tags, users and more and the Annotator is designed for easy extensibility so its a cinch to add a new feature or behaviour.

##Web and Systems Administrator

We seek as soon as possible a full time web and system administrator to support our core team and international network of projects and communities to collaborate effectively using a broad range of open source and custom web applications, and to help maintain a reliable server infrastructure. We are looking for someone who has experience configuring and maintaining open source web applications and who feels at ease within an active community of developers, creators, and users. We seek a motivated, self-starting web administrator to help keep our services healthy and spam free. We don’t necessarily want a hardcore sysadmin, but someone who is able to use the command line when necessary! You will be part of one of the major international players in the open data/open knowledge world, meet exciting like-minded people from various backgrounds and countries, and get considerable freedom in deciding how the job gets done.

Our environment requires managing a complex, customized wordpress deployment (70+ sites, 1000+ registered users with dozens of plugins and sophisticated team access), 150+ mailing lists (with approx. 2,500 subscription in total), several wikis (500+ articles), a tracking system, and more.
